KBE Building Corporation Selected For Carrington School Project In Waterbury
KBE Building Corporation (KBE) (www.kbebuilding.com) has just recently started construction on the new Carrington Elementary School in Waterbury, Connecticut. KBE is Construction Manager at Risk for the project.
KBE Building Corporation (KBE) (www.kbebuilding.com) has just recently started construction on the new Carrington Elementary School in Waterbury, Connecticut. Located adjacent to the existing elementary school, the $28 million, 82,000 s/f Pre-K to eighth Grade school is expected to host its first students in the fall of 2013. KBE is Construction Manager at Risk for the project.
“We are excited to be a part of this project which represents a firm commitment from the City of Waterbury to providing the best education facilities possible to its children,” said Mike Kolakowski, KBE President and CEO. “KBE has tremendous experience in projects of this type and we look forward to completing it and giving the keys to the City in time for the 2013 school year.”
Designed by Friar Associates of Farmington, the new school features an exterior of light-colored brick and stone exterior. Inside, the school will provide a media center, technology labs, “cafetorium” (cafeteria and auditorium combination), a 138-bleacher seat gymnasium with a divider and locker rooms, academic classrooms, special education classrooms, and administrative offices The school will have radiant heating in the pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and special education classrooms.
The project also incorporates many sustainable design features to help achieve the State of Connecticut’s equivalency of a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver rating.
KBE worked closely with the architect - Friar Associates of Farmington, Connecticut, the City of Waterbury, and the City’s School Construction Administrator, O&G Industries as the project’s design has been completed, presented to the Board of Education and has been approved.
KBE’s Preconstruction team supported the project throughout this process with in-depth Preconstruction Planning services, including Building Information Modeling (BIM), constructability reviews, value engineering, detailed cost estimates, and project scheduling.
After the construction of the new school has been completed, the existing school will be demolished as part of the overall program to make way for new play fields.
KBE has completed nearly a dozen K-12 schools in Connecticut and Massachusetts, most recently the W.F. Kaynor Technical High School renovation and addition in the City of Waterbury for the State of Connecticut Department of Public Works.

Robert Kennedy, Jr. to Speak at Green Symposium at SDSU
Environmental law professor Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will be the keynote speaker as part of UnitedGREEN’s second Forging a Sustainable Future Symposium to be held March 3 and 4, 2012 at San Diego State University.
The first FSF event was held at Qualcomm Corporate Headquarters in November 2011 and resulted in numerous partnerships and collaborations as people who met there have continued working together. Congressman Bob Filner and San Diego City Councilmember Marti Emerald spoke at that symposium and are expected to return for the March event, as is Lori Saldana. Saldana is a former member of the California State Assembly, professor at SDSU, and one of the founders of Earth Day in Balboa Park. Former Lt. Gov., now Congressman John Garamendi will also be speaking at the March event, along with numerous local professors, and experts-at-large.
“We will keeping having these conferences until San Diego is self-sustaining,” said FSF co-chair, Patrick Hurley. His co-chair, Walter Meyer added, “We hear all the time, ‘there has been enough talking, it’s time for action.’ Our goal is to bring people together who are ready to act.”
In addition to the local experts, a professor from Curitba, Brazil, will be speaking remotely to explain how that city has become a model for sustainability on a large scale. Sustainability consultant Morgan Pitts will present, as he calls it, “the 30,000 foot view,” addressing how all areas of a region must work together, culturally, economically, and environmentally. Pitts has presented to the European Parliament in Brussels, is currently providing research support for the NRDC’s green building team in Beijing and conducting research for the United Nations University for Peace. Pitts will ask the question, “How do we remake the human presence in the world in a way that is sustainable, fair and just, and which creates no ugliness now or for future generations.” He will talk about how the city of Oberlin, Ohio is working toward that goal and how those same ideas can be applied to the San Diego/Tijuana/Imperial Counties region.
Local sustainability consultant Jim Bell and SDSU Professor Heather Honea have prepared a plan that details how San Diego can be off-grid and lead the way into a new way of looking at the massive environmental issues facing the region and the planet.
UnitedGREEN’s Executive Director, Mark Hanson, Ph.D., said, “At the November event, we brought together experts from academia, government, industry, and the community and already we are seeing projects moving forward as a result of the collaborations forged at that event. At the March event we want the best and the brightest to report on what has been accomplished since November and outline what needs to be done next.”
The goal of the nonprofit UnitedGREEN (GrassRoots Environment and Energy Network) is to speed the transition to a sustainable future for all the people of San Diego by sparking collaborations between key public and private entities by facilitating a grassroots movement that engages and unites the community in a shared fight for a truly sustainable future and foster projects and initiatives that generate a green economy and accelerate the establishment of green enterprises employing a green-collar workforce. UnitedGREEN had hosted two other green conferences prior to the first FSF in November.

Green Deal ‘Could Hinder Loft and Cavity Wall Insulation’ Knauf Insulation
Government's Green Deal is forecast to be 93 per cent lower than under the present system.
A fall in loft and cavity wall insulation installations across the UK has been forecast under the Green Deal by the government's own figures.
According to data revealed by construction publication Building.co.uk from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the level of loft insulation installation work being carried out under the Green Deal is forecast to be 93 per cent lower than under the present system.
Furthermore, cavity wall insulation rates could fall by as much as 70 per cent.
Predicted reductions in the number of homes being helped under the Green Deal has been put down to low projected uptake of the scheme, with popular initiatives such as CERT set to finish by the end of this year.
The news follows the publication last month of figures for the number of homes taking part in insulation subsidy schemes in England and Wales, with a 90 per cent fall to 19,142 properties forecast for 2012 in comparison to the previous year.
Shadow energy secretary Caroline Flint said: "This government is so out of touch that when families are facing record energy bills and a bitter winter, it has cut help for people trying to do the right thing and make their homes more energy efficient."
